A new trailer has arrived for Victorian Psycho, giving horror fans a fresh look at Maika Monroe’s turn as the psychopathic governess Winifred Notty. The gothic horror satire comes from Sanctuary director Zachary Wigon and is headed to theatres this fall after earning an R rating for strong bloody violence and brief sexual material. Bleecker Street is distributing Victorian Psycho in the United States and has scheduled the film for a nationwide theatrical release on September 25th.
What is Victorian Psycho about?
Based on the novel by Virginia Feito (Mrs. March), who also wrote the screenplay, Victorian Psycho is set in 1858 and follows:
A young, eccentric governess named Winifred Notty (Maika Monroe) arrives at the remote gothic manor known as Ensor House. Her duties include educating the family’s children while secretly concealing her psychopathic tendencies. As members of the household begin disappearing, the owners of the estate start to suspect there’s something terribly wrong with their newest employee.
Filming took place in Ireland.

Monroe stepped into the lead role after Margaret Qualley, who had originally been attached to star, was forced to exit shortly before production began.
Early reviews have been positive
The trailer arrives after JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray awarded the film an 8/10 review, praising Wigon’s direction and Monroe’s performance.
Bumbray described the movie as “more of a satire than a full-on horror flick,” calling it “an extremely well done” gothic thriller that blends Victorian elegance with unhinged violence. He singled out Monroe’s performance as one of her best, noting that she shifts from the kind of sympathetic heroine she’s known for to playing a completely unpredictable psychopath.
He also praised Virginia Feito’s screenplay, Ariel Marx’s score, and the film’s production values, noting that “If Merchant/Ivory had made a serial killer movie, it might have looked something like this.” According to Bumbray, the ninety-minute running time and sharp blend of horror and satire make Victorian Psycho one of the year’s most entertaining genre offerings and a potential future cult classic.
