For many people, there’s nothing worse than one of their favorite apps being down, throwing a wrench into their routine or their impulse to update their progress. On Sunday morning, the social media platform for cinephiles, Letterboxd, went down, locking users out of their accounts and preventing them from sharing their thoughts and feelings on the movie review platform.
Log In, Get Booted
If you opened the Letterboxd app earlier today, you’d find that you were involuntarily signed out of your account. If you entered your log-in info, it looked like you were golden, but then the app booted you back to the original screen. If you opened the app on your desktop, you’d receive the following message: “An error occurred. Please try again later.”
The outage began around 6 a.m. PT on Sunday, with over 1,000 users reporting issues, according to DownDetector.
Wi-Fi Nightmares & Glitches
App outages are not uncommon, especially at a time when the internet can feel like a vast digital wild west with less-than-adequate security. I was hacked just last week after using the Wi-Fi at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport, which resulted in a rogue DM blast offering MrBeast crypto to everyone I’ve ever spoken to, a complete nightmare. While Letterboxd’s issue appears to have been a routine technical failure rather than a breach, it was enough to spark plenty of panic among film fans online.
In an attempt to quell concerns about the outage, Letterboxd posted the following message to its official Instagram account: “Hang in there. Our team is aware of an outage affecting service and is working to restore access as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience and support.”
The outage comes at a time when several companies are looking to purchase Letterboxd, with potential buyers being Netflix, Sony Pictures, Paramount Skydance, the private equity firm TPG, and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian. As of June, Letterboxd has more than 30 million users worldwide, making it a hub for film fans to gather and share opinions and critiques about their favorite (or least favorite) films.
Social Media Fatigue
I wish I had the wherewithal to keep up with my Letterboxd account. I watch enough movies and television shows to create an interesting profile, but I don’t have the patience for social media in general. I barely use my Facebook and Twitter accounts.
