Yo, ho! Could it be a pirate’s life for Johnny Depp once again? If producer Jerry Bruckheimer has his way, chances are we’ll see Captain Jack Sparrow hoisting a Jolly Roger and sailing the high seas for Pirates of the Caribbean 6! While catching up with Deadline at this week’s D23 celebration, Bruckheimer told Deadline, “we’re talking to Johnny (Depp), we’re working on a screenplay, and hopefully we can get this done.”
A New Horizon for Captain Jack Sparrow
Sources outside of Bruckheimer’s orbit say another installment of Disney’s Pirates franchise won’t hinge on Sparrow’s misadventures. Instead, the movie will focus on Margot Robbie’s character, with Sparrow acting as a First Mate of sorts. In other words, a new chapter would see Sparrow passing the rum bottle to Robbie’s character.
It’s been almost 10 years since 2017’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, which gave the franchise its lowest box office earnings ever, with $795.9M worldwide. Still, Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean movies have grossed $4.5 billion at the global box office. With numbers like that, it’s best not to let the property fade into obscurity.
Scrooge Goes Horror: Depp’s Dark Studio Comeback
While a return to the Caribbean remains in development, Depp is already gearing up for a major studio comeback in a very different genre with Ti West’s Ebenezer. Less than a month ago at San Diego Comic-Con, Johnny Depp surprised the crowd by wandering the event as Mr. Scrooge for his upcoming holiday film Ebenezer. Depp emerged from a faux 1880s British Christmas village in San Diego’s Gaslamp district and spoke with the crowd for more than an hour, all while in costume and in character.
Coming to theaters on November 13, 2026, Ebenezer is a dark, supernatural re-imagining of Charles Dickens’ classic 1843 novella, starring Johnny Depp as Ebenezer Scrooge. The spooky holiday film marks Depp’s first major Hollywood studio lead role in several years. While most renditions of Dickens’ classic tale give audiences the warm fuzzies during bitter winter days, West’s Ebenezer is said to be a haunted, gothic, and chilling horror story about how Scrooge became the tortured soul we all know and love. Set against a menacing Victorian backdrop, Ebenezer sounds aggressively stylish and atmospheric, which makes me excited to experience this new take on a timeless tale.
