Anderson’s Event Horizon.
The documentary is being directed by Gencarelli, who says his love of Sam Neill, horror movies, and ’90s cinema inspired the project. He describes Event Horizon and In the Mouth of Madness as two of his favorite horror movies and points out that, despite disappointing box office performances when they were originally released, both films have since developed passionate cult followings.
Beyond the Horizon of Madness aims to revisit that era of Neill’s career and celebrate the lasting legacy of these two ambitious ’90s horror films.
Gencarelli has already secured interviews with several key figures from the films. In the Mouth of Madness director John Carpenter and cast member Julie Carmen are confirmed to participate, while Event Horizon stars Jack Noseworthy and Kathleen Quinlan, along with director Paul W.S. Anderson, have also been lined up for interviews. The documentary is being executive produced by filmmaker Kevin Smith, who has also been interviewed about his Neill fandom.
What is In the Mouth of Madness about?
Directed by John Carpenter from a screenplay by Michael De Luca, In the Mouth of Madness stars Sam Neill as insurance investigator John Trent.
Trent is hired to find missing horror novelist Sutter Cane, only to discover that Cane’s terrifying stories may be having an impossible effect on the real world. As Trent travels to the fictional New England town of Hobb’s End, the line between fiction and reality begins to disappear.
The movie was not a major box office success when it was released in 1994, but it has since become one of Carpenter’s most celebrated cult films.
What is Event Horizon about?
Released in 1997, Event Horizon stars Sam Neill alongside Laurence Fishburne, Joely Richardson, Kathleen Quinlan, Richard T. Jones and Jack Noseworthy.
Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson from a screenplay by Philip Eisner, the movie follows a rescue crew investigating the mysterious return of the Event Horizon, a spaceship that disappeared seven years earlier. They soon discover that the ship’s missing crew is dead, and that something terrifying has come back with it.
Like In the Mouth of Madness, Event Horizon initially struggled with critics and audiences but developed a devoted cult following over the years.
When will Beyond the Horizon of Madness be released?
If everything goes according to plan, Beyond the Horizon of Madness: The Horrors of Sam Neill is targeting a Halloween-season release in October 2027. That would make the documentary a particularly appropriate October viewing for fans of ’90s horror, Sam Neill, John Carpenter, In the Mouth of Madness, and Event Horizon.
