The box office juggernaut that is Spider-Man: Brand New Day just keeps chugging along. This weekend, it managed to gross another $22.2 million (slightly more than we predicted earlier this week), with its domestic total now standing at an incredible $891 million. That puts it just $45 million away from overtaking Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ $936 million domestic gross to become the highest-grossing movie of all time domestically. Could it even manage to become the first movie ever to gross $1 billion domestically? It made another $44 million internationally, with its global box office now standing at $2.3 billion.
Coyote vs. Acme scores an underdog win
In a surprise win this weekend, Ketchup Entertainment’s Coyote vs. Acme rallied to score a solid $15.4 million second-place finish, ahead of Christopher Nolan’s box office champ The Odyssey. While a mid-teens opening is hardly a blockbuster number, one must remember this title was going to be written off by Warner Bros. and never released. Ketchup had to make do with a much smaller marketing spend than it would have gotten at WB, going the grassroots route. The solid gross and A CinemaScore rating make this a nice underdog win for the fledgling distributor, and hopefully the film has legs going into the fall.
The Odyssey wasn’t too far behind, with $14.3 million and a $563 million domestic total. It actually only fell 27% from last weekend, despite losing 474 theaters, which is a terrific hold. Its worldwide total is now $1.55 billion.
Insidious holds while The Dog Stars bombs
Insidious: Out of the Further had a less impressive hold, falling 60% to $10.1 million. Still, that’s not unusual for horror, and its $43.6 million domestic haul is solid. Overseas, it’s made $66.6 million, for a great $110 million worldwide haul.
Sadly, Ridley Scott had one of the biggest disasters of his storied career, with The Dog Stars opening to a terrible $8 million. The writing was on the wall for this one, with Disney dumping it at the end of the summer, which is always reserved for movies no one thinks are going to perform. With a C+ CinemaScore rating, audiences are cool on this grim, post-apocalyptic tale. With a rumoured $110 million budget, this one is going to spill a lot of red ink for Disney, which has had a so-so summer, with The Mandalorian and Grogu and Moana both underperforming, although Toy Story 5 and The Devil Wears Prada 2 were hits. It didn’t do much better overseas, making $11.3 million for a worldwide $19.3 million haul.
Buddy surprises as other releases struggle
Roadside Attractions’ oddball horror flick Buddy proved to be a bit of a sleeper hit this weekend, grossing a better-than-expected $5.3 million on only 1,258 screens. It managed to beat WB’s The End of Oak Street, which is proving to be a big flop, with it making $4.9 million for a terrible $46 million total. Overseas, it didn’t perform much better, with the worldwide total only $105 million. Ouch.
PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie made $4.8 million for a $43 million total, although it’s performed a lot better overseas, with its worldwide total a big $124 million.
The Jason Statham-led Mutiny plummeted a terrible 64% at the box office, with it only making $2.7 million for a low domestic haul of $13.2 million — although that comes with an asterisk, as Amazon Prime infamously leaked it online days before it opened.
The top 10 was rounded out by A24’s excellent Tony, its Anthony Bourdain biopic, which has been a sleeper hit, making $2.2 million for a decent $11 million domestic total.
Next weekend is Labor Day, which is usually pretty slow, making it possible that Spider-Man: Brand New Day could top the box office again, although Adam Wingard’s Onslaught and Paramount’s By Any Means will give it a run for its money.
