Director still hoping to make third Happy Death Day, reveals working title

Writer/director Christopher Landon and Blumhouse Productions are hoping they'll be able to turn HAPPY DEATH DAY (watch it HERE) into a trilogy one of these days, but since HAPPY DEATH DAY 2U (watch that one HERE) underperformed at the box office, the third film isn't currently moving forward. And yet, with the creative team wanting to make it and a lot of fans out there hoping it will get made, it sort of feels like the third film is inevitable.

So while we continue to wait for HAPPY DEATH DAY 3 to get a greenlight, it's time for another "it's not happening yet, but we hope it will" update.

Empire caught up with Landon after the release of the trailer for his new film FREAKY, a body swap slasher that he feels exists in the same universe as the HAPPY DEATH DAY movies, and when the subject of a third HAPPY DEATH DAY came up the filmmaker said:

It's definitely off to the side at the moment. I wish it wasn't, and I know that [Jason Blum, producer] is passionate about it, I know I'm very passionate about it, and I know that [Jessica Rothe is really eager to do it as well. I wrote the idea for the third movie some time ago. I think we're all excited by it, because it's different than the other two films, and so we're really just crossing our fingers and hoping that our fanbase continues to grow – which is something that I've really enjoyed watching over the years, seeing more and more people discover both films. So who knows. There might be a time when it makes sense, and hopefully it's sooner rather than later."

Rothe is so enthusiastic about getting the chance to play her character again, she has even said she'll be willing to come back for the third film whether it happens "now or in five years or ten or twenty, if we pull a Jamie Lee Curtis from HALLOWEEN and Tree comes back as a badass 50-year-old". As it turns out, the idea Landon has for the film will still work no matter when it happens.

The idea for the third film is not set in the same day, if that's a big spoiler. So it can happen later. We're not up against a really difficult clock right now. The other movies were hard, because they were set in the exact same day, so everybody had to look the same, be the same. The pressure is off there."

Landon went on to reveal that the working title for the third film is not HAPPY DEATH DAY 3, nor does it have a number in it at all. If he gets his way, the third film will be called HAPPY DEATH DAY TO US.
