“What if all this is a ghost story?”
Up to now, Lionsgate had been pretty vague and secretive on what kind of movie Day Drinker would be. Their official description gave the impression it could likely be a thriller, then yesterday’s trailer tease, a more ominous tone was displayed with a shot of tarot cards and shots of Johnny Depp’s mysterious character quickly cutting over it. There hasn’t been a lot that has been revealed about the movie, but an image of Depp was released last year, which showcases him in an interesting look with long grey hair, a grey beard and piercing light eyes.
Lionsgate has now released the teaser trailer and it looks as if there is a strong horror element in the film, with the font of the title even throwing back to paperback novels of horror stories. We also have scary imagery, a haunting chorus wailing and Johnny Depp taking out bad guys with an axe. Check it out in the embed above.
Day Drinker Details
According to Lionsgate’s official description, Day Drinker tells the story of a private yacht bartender (Madelyn Cline) who encounters a mysterious onboard guest (Johnny Depp). They soon find themselves entangled with a criminal figure (Penélope Cruz) and connected in ways no one saw coming.
In addition to Depp, Cruz, and Cline, Lionsgate adds four to Day Drinker with Manu Ríos, Arón Piper, Juan Diego Botto, and Anika Boyle. The film, which begins production in Spain, is produced by Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, who produce the John Wick franchise for Lionsgate, Adam Kolbrenner, producer of The Tomorrow War, Free Guy, and Prisoners, and Zach Dean, who also wrote the original screenplay. Apple TV+/Skydance recently released Kolbrenner and Dean’s film The Gorge.
The film’s executive producers include Dan Friedkin, Micah Green, Daniel Steinman, Stephen Deuters, Jason Forman, Sam Sarkar, Marc Webb, Eric Sherman, Sarah Hong, Scott LaStaiti, Christopher Woodrow, Connor DiGregorio, and Adrián Guerra.
When filming had jump-started, Webb expressed his enthusiasm for the project, “I’m excited to be starting production with Johnny, Madelyn, Penélope, and this incredible cast. We’re in a beautiful location with a fantastic crew and a thrilling, ferocious story to tell. This is gonna be fun.”
Day Drinker pours into theaters on March 26, 2027.
