Donald Glover rarely chooses the projects I think he will, and his next will be a live-action series adaptation of Krafton’s best-selling battle royale video game, PUBG. Huh. The project is in the works at Netflix, and in addition to starring in the series, Glover will write and executive-produce alongside his brother, Stephen Glover.
PUBG
PUBG, which was originally titled PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, debuted in 2017. There’s not really much of a plot, as the online multiplayer game simply involves a large group of players who find themselves parachuting onto an island and are forced to scavenge for weapons and equipment in order to kill the others and become the last player standing. A very simple, but solid framework to craft a series around. The sky is pretty much the limit.
Since PUBG‘s release, it has become one of the best-selling video games of all time, with over 75 million copies sold. Over the years, there have been talks of expanding the franchise. Krafton previously announced plans to develop a PUBG movie and TV series, and an animated series by Castlevania executive producer Adi Shankar was also in the works at Netflix. So far, the closest players have come to any sort of PUBG movie or series is a live-action short directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Kong: Skull Island) for the game’s PS4 debut.
I’m curious to see what the Glover brothers have cooked up for the PUBG series.
Netflix & Video Games
In addition to PUBG, Netflix has a few video game adaptations in the works. A live-action series based on Assassin’s Creed has been shooting since the spring. It is set in Ancient Rome in 64 AD, a turbulent period marked by the Great Fire of Rome and the reign of Nero.
The cast includes Lola Petticrew, Toby Wallace, Zachary Hart, Laura Marcus, Tanzyn Crawford, Nabhann Rizwan, Claes Bang, Noomi Rapace, Ramzy Bedia, Sean Harris, Corrado Invernizzi, Sandra Guldberg-Kampp, Youssef Kerkour, Mirren Mack, and Louis McCartney. Hopefully, this one will be better than the 2016 movie starring Michael Fassbender.
There’s also a Gears of War movie in the works at the streaming service. David Leitch is attached to direct, and he seemed optimistic earlier this year that the project was finally going to move forward
“Gears of War, I think, is going to happen,” he said. “We have a great draft that’s in progress that’s in really great shape. The studio’s more determined than ever to make it. Netflix is 100% behind it. The Coalition is fired up, as well. They have their game releasing this year, as well, and so it’s all lining up that that movie will happen.“
What do you think of Donald Glover turning PUBG into a live-action series?
