After 17 years of being bogged down in development hell and legal entanglements, the Friday the 13th franchise has been revived with the streaming series Crystal Lake – and the return to Camp Crystal Lake has been a major hit for Peacock. Crystal Lake creator/showrunner Brad Caleb Kane already has ideas for what could come next, letting interviewers know that if the series gets a second season, fans can expect more of Jason Voorhees in his sack-covered look, more bloody kills, and a deeper exploration of the eccentric residents of the town that gave the show its name.
There’s just one catch: Peacock has not officially renewed Crystal Lake for a second season. However, the show’s early viewership numbers and Kane’s plans for continuing the story give fans plenty of reasons to hope the series will return.
Crystal Lake Is a Major Peacock Streaming Success
According to figures reported by TheWrap, Crystal Lake accumulated 1.3 billion minutes viewed during its first 11 days on Peacock. The series, which debuted on October 15, has become the streaming service’s fourth-biggest original scripted series to date, based on internal NBCUniversal figures. The show also ranked third among streaming original series and third among the most-watched first seasons across television in Nielsen’s rankings for the week of October 19. Beyond streaming, Crystal Lake generated 1.8 billion earned social media impressions in its first 24 hours and more than 7.6 million social video views during its first 11 days, according to figures attributed to Sprout Social.
Those numbers suggest that the Friday the 13th series has found a substantial audience. Whether that will be enough to secure a second season remains to be seen, but Kane has already discussed where he would take the story.
What to Expect From Crystal Lake Season 2
More Sackhead Jason and Bloody Kills
The first season ends with Jason loose in the woods wearing a sack over his head, setting the stage for a more active role for the young killer if the series continues. Kane has expressed enthusiasm for exploring that version of Jason, promising a potential second season with much more Sackhead Jason and a whole lot more carnage. The plan would move the show closer to the familiar pleasures of the Friday the 13th movies, with inventive kills and the threat of Jason becoming a more prominent part of the story.
The first season established Pamela Voorhees, played by Linda Cardellini, as its emotional center while exploring the events surrounding Jason’s childhood. A second season could build on that foundation while delivering more slasher violence.
A Twin Peaks-Inspired Look at Crystal Lake
Kane has also discussed expanding the series’ focus beyond Pamela and Jason to explore the strange and complicated lives of Crystal Lake’s residents. The proposed approach has been compared to Twin Peaks, the David Lynch and Mark Frost mystery series known for its eccentric small-town characters and unsettling secrets. That influence could give Crystal Lake more room to develop characters like Crazy Ralph, Officer Dorf, Trudy, Rita, and Levon and Briana Brooks, while Pamela and Jason remain at the center of the narrative.
The 1970s setting would also allow the series to continue exploring the era’s culture, atmosphere, and social tensions.
More Friday the 13th Connections
A potential second season could also expand the show’s connections to the wider Friday the 13th mythology. Kane has specifically mentioned the Jarvis family, best known to franchise fans through Tommy Jarvis, the character introduced in Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter and later featured in Friday the 13th: A New Beginning and Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part VI. The possibility of the Jarvis family having an earlier connection to Crystal Lake would give the series another way to weave familiar franchise history into its new story.
However, fans should not expect Season 2 to catch up with the events of the original Friday the 13th movie just yet. Kane has indicated that there are more stories to tell about Pamela, Jason, and the town before the series reaches the events of the 1980 film, which he has confirmed are still eight years away as of the end of the first season.
Will Peacock Renew Crystal Lake for Season 2?
Despite the encouraging viewership figures and Kane’s plans, a second season remains unconfirmed. The creator has said he knows the general direction he wants to take the story, and the first season’s conclusion leaves room for further adventures at Camp Crystal Lake.
The series stars Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees and Callum Vinson as young Jason, alongside William Catlett, Devin Kessler, Cameron Scoggins, Gwendolyn Sundstrom, and Nick Cordileone. Produced by A24, the eight-episode first season explores Pamela’s grief following Jason’s apparent drowning and the events that shape the woman audiences first encountered in the original 1980 film.
In my review of the complete first season, I praised Cardellini’s performance, the show’s use of familiar characters and locations, and its affection for the original Friday the 13th. I also had reservations about some of its mythology changes and pacing decisions, but ultimately found the series a highly enjoyable return to this world.
All eight episodes of Crystal Lake are available to stream on Peacock in the United States.
For now, fans will have to wait for Peacock to make a decision. But with strong early viewing figures and a creative plan that promises more Jason, more carnage, and more of the town’s peculiar residents, there is clearly room for Crystal Lake to continue.
