What I know about "black metal" couldn't even fill a thimble, but I do know that director Jonas Åkerlund's upcoming horror drama LORDS OF CHAOS does have basis in reality. The newly released trailer, which can be seen below, even lets viewers know that the story is "based on truth and lies".

This is essentially a biopic about the Norwegian band Mayhem, which was formed in 1984. The official synopsis goes like this:

A teenager’s quest to launch Norwegian Black Metal in Oslo in the 1980s results in a very violent outcome. Lords of Chaos tells the true story of True Norwegian Black Metal and its most notorious practitioners – a group of young men with a flair for publicity, church-burning and murder: MAYHEM.

The film, which Åkerlund wrote with Dennis Magnusson, stars Rory Culkin, Emory Cohen, Jack Kilmer, Sky Ferreira, Anthony De La Torre, and Valter Skarsgard.

I don't know anything about Mayhem beyond what I learned by glancing over their Wikipedia page, but a familiarity with the band isn't required to be intrigued by the movie. Judging by the trailer, LORDS OF CHAOS looks like it's going to be very interesting and unnerving.

Gunpowder & Sky will be giving LORDS OF CHAOS a theatrical release on February 8th, with a VOD release following on February 22nd.
