A lion stalks mercenary Megan Fox in trailer for M.J. Bassett’s Rogue

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Director M.J. Bassett's action thriller ROGUE will be receiving a Digital and VOD release on August 28th, with a Blu-ray and DVD release to follow on September 1st. Today the trailer has arrived online and can be seen above, giving us our first look at this story of mercenaries, kidnappers, and a man-eating lion.

ROGUE stars Megan Fox as

a mercenary named Samantha O'Hara who battles ruthless kidnappers and an equally dangerous lion after a rescue mission in Africa goes awry.

If that synopsis isn't enough to sell you on this one, let's see how Bassett describes the movie:

ROGUE is the story of a small mercenary unit of soldiers who have been engaged by the governor of an African country to rescue his daughter who has been kidnapped by an Al-Shabaab-type organization,. This unit goes in, there’s more than one girl so their plan is immediately compromised, and their extraction goes wrong. So, suddenly they find themselves on the run from the bad guys, looking for refuge in Africa, and come across an abandoned farm, or they think it’s abandoned. While they’re hunkering down they realize that the farm was used as a poachers’ stronghold and a breeding place for lions for the hunting industry and the East Asian medicinal market. And though the lions seem to have escaped, there’s clearly one still around. So, suddenly they realize they have no ammunition and they are very much the bottom of the food chain, and they have to survive the night before the bad guys arrive, the lion gets them, and the extraction can happen."

Bassett wrote the screenplay with her daughter Isabel Bassett, who also has an acting role in the film. Bassett's previous directorial credits include DEATHWATCH, SOLOMON KANE, SILENT HILL: REVELATION, and episodes of Ash vs. Evil Dead.

Fox and the younger Bassett are joined in the cast by Philip Winchester, Greg Kriek, Jessica Sutton, Calli Taylor, Brandon Auret, Adam Deacon, and Sisanda Henna.

The CGI used to bring the lion to life isn't exactly convincing, but ROGUE looks like it could be entertaining. I'll give it a chance.
