A Quiet Place spin-off’s 2023 release has been delayed six months

Jeff Nichols (Midnight Special) was attached to write and direct a new entry in the A Quiet Place franchise, working from an idea crafted by the previous two films’ writer/director John Krasinski, for about eleven months… but then he left the project behind. A couple weeks ago, we heard that Nichols is being replaced by Pig director Michael Sarnoski – and now Coming Soon reports that the release of the film has been delayed six months, being pushed back from the date Nichols was aiming for (March 31, 2023) to the new date of September 22, 2023.

That seems like a good date; it gets the film out into the world just in time for the Halloween season, and gives it a few weeks to play before the David Gordon Green Exorcist movie (which brings Ellen Burstyn back into the franchise) reaches theatres on October 13th.

Given the shake-up behind the scenes, it’s not surprising to hear that Paramount wants to take a little extra time with this new A Quiet Place movie, which is being referred to as a spin-off rather than a sequel. The story will take place in the same world established in the first two movies, but apparently isn’t focused on the Abbott family, the characters we followed through Krasinski’s movies.

Deadline’s sources said that

after recently seeing Pig and being blown away by the film, Krasinski was quick to put Sarnoski on the short list of directors to take a meeting for the project. While insiders say Sarnoski vision for the film was still his own and different from what Krasinski had done with the first two, he still gave a pitch that fit the tone of the world they had created and felt he was the perfect fit for their next installment.

Krasinski will be producing this A Quiet Place under his Sunday Night banner, while Michael Bay, Andrew Form, and Brad Fuller will produce through their company Platinum Dunes. Krasinski’s Sunday Night partner Allyson Seeger serves as executive producer.
