A new trailer has arrived for Above the Below, a survival thriller starring Idris Elba (Luther, Beast) alongside Caitlin FitzGerald (Masters of Sex) and Hero Fiennes Tiffin (the After franchise). Elba co-directs the film with Martin Owen (The Loneliest Boy in the World), and Lionsgate will bring the movie to U.S. theatres on December 4, 2026.
The film takes three astronauts from the dangers of space into an even more terrifying predicament: a desperate fight for survival in the depths of the ocean. What Is Above the Below About?
The official synopsis for Above the Below reads:
“After three astronauts survive a disaster in space, their unscheduled crash-landing leaves them trapped in the crushing depths of the ocean with no contact with mission control and oxygen rapidly running out. In a race against time where every breath could be their last, the crew faces impossible choices, mounting odds, and new dangers in this pulse-pounding story about what we do when faced with the greatest stakes imaginable.”
Elba stars as Jackson, the mission commander responsible for leading the crew through its ordeal. FitzGerald plays Brooks, the mission’s strong-willed and determined co-pilot, while Fiennes Tiffin portrays Rhodes, an idealistic astronaut undertaking his first mission.
Idris Elba Co-Directs Above the Below
Above the Below marks another directing project for Elba, who made his feature directorial debut with the 2018 crime drama Yardie. He shares directing duties on the new thriller with Owen, whose previous films include The Loneliest Boy in the World, L.A. Slasher, Let’s Be Evil, Killers Anonymous, The Intergalactic Adventures of Max Cloud, and Twist.
The screenplay was written by Elizabeth Morris, Matthew Mitchell, and Vicki Sargent, based on a story created by Owen. Gina Carter and Matt Williams produced the film, with Pascal Degove serving as executive producer.
