Do you guys remember the announcement that the fantasy novel LARKLIGHT was set to be adapted for the big screen? No? Well don’t worry.. I wrote the article back in April of 2008 and I don’t even remember that shite! I blame it on the illegal substances.. They say the memory is the first to go.
Seriously though, I do remember writing that article but unfortunately we haven’t heard anything regarding the project since! Until today that is… You see the fine folks over at The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision blog have finally been able to dig up some news on the project and dare I say this one is a doozy! Apparently Shekhar Kapur is out as director and Tomas Alfredson is in! Alfredson is of course the director that brought us the brilliant 2008 Swedish vampire flick LET THE RIGHT ONE IN. Oh yeah… that guy. Need I say my interest in this thing has just increased? I didn’t think so.
Alfredson boards the project with Steven Knight touching up the script. The EASTERN PROMISES scribe had previously adapted the novel with Kapur and is now doing a once-over and freshening things up. Written by Philip Reeve, the synopsis for the LARKLIGHT novel reads:
A period fantasy set in a Victorian-era alternate universe in which mankind has been exploring the solar system since the time of Isaac Newton, LARKLIGHT revolves around a brother and sister who team with a band of renegade space pirates to save the world from destruction at the hands of a madman.
As previously announced, Di Novi Pictures and Warner Bros. are pegging this one with a price tag of around $200 million so I think it’s a safe bet that we can probably expect something epic, especially now that Alfredson is in the director’s chair. No word on when this little diddy will get rolling but as always as soon as we hear something you’ll be the first to know! In the meantime be sure to hit us with your thoughts on this whole thing below!
