Alex Garland doubts 28 Months Later will ever happen

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

It was way back in November of 2008 that we last brought you guys word on the possible follow up to 28 DAYS LATER and 28 WEEKS LATER with original director Danny Boyle telling SciFi Wire: "I feel the idea is quite a strong idea, and it could well involve directing it. Yeah, absolutely. I've got an idea for it, so I can't really tell you any more than that at the moment, but hopefully, that might happen."

Since then word has been mostly quiet on 28 MONTHS LATER. Until today, where we have word from screenwriter Alex Garland that the third film will most likely never happen. Garland broke this unfortunate news on a recent Reddit AMA where a fan asked if there were "Any plans for another 28 days/weeks/months/years movie?"

To which Alex Garland responded:

Kind of, but doubt it will ever happen.

That's too bad. I know everyone and their mothers are sick of zombie flicks, but the 28 DAYS LATER series was always one of the welcome editions to the subgenre. Oh, well. Hopefully, things change, and if they do, we will let you know ASAP. Until then let us know what you think of Garland's thoughts about the third film in the comments below or on social media.

28 WEEKS LATER synopsis:

Six months after the original epidemic, the rage virus has all but annihilated the population of the British Isles. Nevertheless, the U.S. Army declares the danger past, and American soldiers arrive to restore order and begin reconstruction. Refugees return to British soil, but one of them carries a deadly secret: The virus is not gone and is even more dangerous than before.
