Alexandre Desplat moves from Rogue One to Luc Besson’s Valerian

Just last week it was revealed that Alexandre Desplat, who was set to compose the score for ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY, had departed the project and was replaced by Michael Giacchino (STAR TREK BEYOND). The reason for Desplat's departure wound up being the ROGUE ONE reshoots which unfortunately pushed the scoring schedule back to the point where Desplat was no longer available. Thanks to Luc Besson, we now know which project Desplat had rebounded to, Besson's own VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS.

Production on VALERIAN wrapped up several months ago but with plenty of post-production work to be done on the VFX heavy flick, it may be a little while before we see any real footage from Luc Besson's latest movie. Our own Paul Shirey got a look at some unfinished footage from VALERIAN at Comic-Con 2016 and he said that it "is absolutely the kind of film we've all been waiting for Besson to make since THE FIFTH ELEMENT." That's good enough for me. Now that Desplat's onboard to pen the score, it's just one more reason to get excited.

VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS is set for a June 21, 2017 release.
