Last May, we heard that AMITYVILLE: THE AWAKENING had received its MPAA rating: an R for "strong horror violence and for language". At that time, the film didn't have a release date (after being pushed out of its original date of January 2015), but it is now scheduled to reach theatres on April 1st, and when the poster promoting its release appeared online last month it, oddly, said that the film had not yet been rated.
Speculation that the film was being cut down to a PG-13 has now been proven correct, as the latest bulletin from FilmRatings.com reveals that AMITYVILLE: THE AWAKENING has been rated PG-13 for "disturbing horror violence and terror, suggestive images, brief language, and thematic material."
The explanation for the harder rating was so much simpler.
This new installment in the franchise that began with THE AMITYVILLE HORROR in 1979 tells the following story:
Belle, her little sister, and her comatose twin brother move into a new house with their single mother Joan in order to save money to help pay for her brother’s expensive healthcare. But when strange phenomena begin to occur in the house including the miraculous recovery of her brother, Belle begins to suspect her Mother isn’t telling her everything and soon realizes they just moved into the infamous Amityville house.
The film was directed by Franck Khalfoun (the MANIAC remake) and stars Jennifer Jason Leigh, Bella Thorne, McKenna Grace, Cameron Monaghan, Kurtwood Smith, Taylor Spreitler, Thomas Mann, and Jennifer Morrison.
