Andrew Garfield put in a trio of great performances in 2021 but he probably deserves some kind of honorary Oscar for lying about not being in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Anyone that would ask the actor about his involvement would swiftly get a lie debunking the news and it turns out Andrew Garfield even lied to his former Spider-Man co-star, Emma Stone, about the news.

Emma Stone starred alongside Garfield in The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and the two began dating during the filming of the first film. Despite no longer being together, the two have remained good friends and he admitted on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz that he couldn’t even tell her the truth about the project:

“Emma kept on texting me, and she was like, ‘Are you in this new Spider-Man film?’ And, I was like, ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about.’ She was like, ‘Shut up, just tell me.’ I’m like, ‘I honestly don’t know.’ I kept it going, even with her. It was hilarious. Then, she saw it, and she was like, ‘You’re a jerk.”

Garfield also got candid about his side of the story on rumors about his role that began circulating before the film’s release. Garfield began shooting on Spider-Man: No Way Home in January 2021 in Atlanta and he detailed a story about a Door Dash driver that delivered food to himself and two of his friends on his first night on the film. Garfield said, “I open the door. I’ve got my mask on, my hat, and I’m like, ‘Thanks, bro,’ and he’s like, ‘Yo, yo, yo, I need to see your ID,’ and I’m like, ‘Huh?’ He’s like, ‘I need to see your ID.’ And I’m like, ‘No delivery food thing has ever asked me for my ID. This is interesting.”

Garfield further explained that he asked the driver to take a step back because of the pandemic and again questioned why he needed to show his ID, to which the driver responded it was because he ordered alcohol. “I didn’t get any alcohol, man, I got tacos,” Garfield told the driver. The actor added, “I definitely wasn’t [rude]. I did ask to social distance, but I obviously upset the man, and I didn’t mean to. I apologize for anything that may have been misconstrued as being rude. I don’t like upsetting people.”

Even with all of the leaks that pointed to Garfield and Tobey Maguire appearing in the film, the actor admits that the team behind the movie never had a moment when they considered admitting they were going to be a part of the project. Garfield said, “It was the right thing to do. A weird self-preservation thing comes in where you start to live with the idea of it not happening in your mind and in your body, and then that just ups the want for the thing to happen.”

I bet Andrew Garfield is damn happy he can talk openly about all of this now, especially to pals like Emma Stone. Even though it was probably fun to hold onto a secret like this, he’s probably relishing the fact that he can discuss what a great experience it was to come back and the fan reaction to it. Spider-Man: No Way Home was certainly the perfect button on a very good year for Garfield.
