David Fincher has tasked his SE7EN scribe Andrew Kevin Walker with re-writing the underwater fantasy epic 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA, reports Deadline. Gonna be awfully hard to fit a squid’s head in a box, let me tell ya.
Since he made a big splash with his spec script SE7EN, Walker has become quite the high-profile screenwriter, having contributed to SLEEPY HOLLOW, 8MM and THE WOLFMAN. He’s also done tons of script doctoring, including on Fincher’s PANIC ROOM and FIGHT CLUB.
CONTAGION writer Scott Z. Burns had penned the first draft of 20,000 LEAGUES, but it would appear as though he’s out.
Based on the book by Jules Verne, 20,000 LEAGUES sets sail like this: Professor Pierre Aronnax, the narrator of the story, boards an American frigate commissioned to investigate a rash of attacks on international shipping by what is thought to be an amphibious monster. The supposed sea creature, which is actually the submarine Nautilus, sinks Aronnax’s vessel and imprisons him along with his devoted servant Conseil and Ned Land, a temperamental harpooner. The survivors meet Captain Nemo, an enigmatic misanthrope who leads them on a worldwide, yearlong underwater adventure.
