Angelina Jolie to play The Bride of Frankenstein?

Angelina Jolie as the Bride of Frankenstein? I can see it.

Tucked into a Hollywood Reporter article about Jolie’s disastrous directorial effort BY THE SEA is the interesting tidbit that Universal Pictures – the studio behind BY THE SEA and a potential BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN remake – might want Jolie to star as the titular monster.

From THR:

But even if Universal loses tens of millions of dollars on By the Sea, the studio is gambling that by backing Jolie Pitt’s artistic whim, she will be amenable to starring in its tentpole Bride of Frankenstein from producer Brian Grazer.

Who is directing BRIDE, or where it falls on Universal’s lists of priorities, is not mentioned. (Neil Burger was attached to helm back in 2009.) As we’re well aware, the studio is in the process of rebooting its entire catalogue of Classic Monsters, although we haven’t heard much talk about BRIDE being among the revived titles. At the moment, THE MUMMY appears to be the film moving forward first; we’re likely years away from seeing the BRIDE strut onto the big screen.

The more curious point at hand is the movie itself. If we’re using the brilliant original film directed by James Whale as a comparison, we know that the Bride doesn’t show up until the film’s final minutes; the entire movie is about the build-up to the ghastly gal (who actually ends up looking pretty darn good, all things considered) and then the movie swiftly kills her off. It’s not foolish to assume that if Universal is indeed seeking Jolie to be in the remake, the character will be featured far more prominently.
