Are You Afraid of the Dark? scores director

Last Updated on July 21, 2021

Paramount Pictures feature film adaptation of Nickelodeon’s teen-friendly ’90s television series ARE YOU AFRAID OF THE DARK? is heading our way Halloween 2019, with THE NUN and IT: CHAPTER TWO screenwriter Gary Dauberman penning the screenplay. With that release date only getting nearer and nearer by the day, it makes sense that the film is currently trying to lock down a director.

And from the looks of it, they just may have done so! Our buddies over at B-D report that director D.J. Caruso is in talks to helm the feature that will “honor the darker, scarier tone of the show.” Caruso is a name that you might recognize around these parts for films such as THE DISAPPOINTMENTS ROOM, DISTURBIA, and TAKING LIVES. But the man also knows his way around big-budget affairs such as EAGLE EYE and I AM NUMBER FOUR.

Does all of this add up to Caruso being a solid pick for directing ARE YOU AFRAID OF THE DARK? Meh. It's all still up in the air for me. Caruso's not a terrible choice and it's only a matter of time before the man gets his shit together and makes a quality horror film. Maybe this will be it.

ARE YOU AFRAID OF THE DARK synopsis:

This kids anthology series recounts ghost stories told by the young members of the Midnight Society as they gather around a campfire. Each episode opens with members of the Midnight Society at their secret spot in the woods, where they prepare their fire and the night's storyteller announces the title of the his or her offering. However, the cameras soon leave the storyteller and switch to the tale being told.

Are you a fan of the Nickelodeon series? If so what do you think was the scariest episode? For me, it's "The Tale of Laughing in the Dark" with the runner-up being "The Tale of the Dead Man's Float." What do you think? Let us know below! The film hits theaters on October 11th, 2019.

Pfft. I wish.
