Avatar blows apart record for most Blu-rays sold in a day!

Earth Day was yesterday, and while some people planted a tree or didn’t shower to save water (or both), a shitload of other people headed out to their favorite movie store and purchased their very own copy of AVATAR on Blu-ray and DVD. The government is now playing with the idea changing it from Earth Day to Avatar Day. We’ll see if that happens.

And while it isn’t enough that AVATAR is still in the top 12 at the box office, James Cameron’s flick continues to set new records for truly being the biggest number one movie ever made. In one day, AVATAR sold 1.5M Blu-ray / DVD combos, destroying the previously held record of 600,000 Blu-rays sold in one day (previously held by THE DARK KNIGHT).

But don’t fret if you were doing something Earthy and not consumery yesterday, as while the numbers are impressive, retailers reportedly only sold about 50-60% of their total units (which means there’s still a copy for you available at your favorite retail store).

This news should surprise no one, considering all the money it made (and continues to make) in theaters, it just proves that AVATAR has total domination over the movie market, in theaters and at home alike.

Now I wonder how much it’ll make when they double-dip it for the holiday season in a whole new special edition…
