There were a lot of trippy films made in the 80’s, and none moreso than Frank Henenlotter’s BRAIN DAMAGE. Think about it: a guy bonds with a suspicious-looking symbiotic parasite (read: a giant dick) that snacks on brains and gives LCD-like hallucinations in return. How’s that for originality?
Over the weekend at DavisDVD, news appeared with regards to the re-releasing of the film to DVD. Being handled by indie distributor Mackinac Media this time around, this bare-bones disc hits shelves on July 11th in the film’s unrated version (includes the gory nightclub ‘fellatio’ gag and ear-pulling scenes). The release will include a 1.85:1 anamorphic transfer and Dolby Digital 2.0 audio with a retail price of $14.99.
Fans of the film know that this upcoming release is junk, since the limited edition special edition released by Synapse Films (which was supposed to be retired December 31, 2003) is still available at Amazon, which features an exclusive remixed Dolby Digital 5.1 track, an audio commentary track by Frank Henenlotter, novelization writer Bob Martin and independent filmmaker Scooter McCrae, the isolated score, trailer and liner notes (this is also the unrated version). Obviously, you know which one to get.
