The Witcher has recast the upcoming role of Eskel with Swiss actor Basil Eidenbenz for the show's second season. Eidenbenz replaces Thur Ersted Rasmussen, who was originally slated to play the character. Rasmussen was named for the role back in February, but due to scheduling conflicts caused by the coronavirus, he opted to relinquish the part. For those who are unfamiliar with the character, Eskel is a Witcher of the school of the Wolf and a longtime friend of Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill).
If Eidenbenz looks familiar, it's likely due to the actor appearing in the British historical drama Victoria, as well as other series the likes of X Company, The Athena, and Best Friends. He's also contributed to a number of films over the past decade like BOYS ARE US, DENIAL, Martin Makariev's WILDLINGS, and Christina Jacobs' OH, ROMONA!
Eidenbenz joins other new cast members to the series including Game of Thrones veteran Kristofer Hivju as Nivellen, Yasen Atour as Coen, Agnes Bjorn as Vereena, Paul Bullion as Lambert, Aisha Fabienne Ross as Lydia, and Mecia Simson as Francesca. Killing Eve actor Kim Bodina is also set to star as Vesemir, Geralt and Eskel's mentor.
Rasmussen recently addressed his departure from the series, calling the decision to leave “heartbreaking,” adding, “but I mostly feel happy and grateful for the days I got to spend on the set earlier this year.” Then, like a true gentleman, Rasmussen wished the show's team “best of luck with the rest of the production.” Lastly, the actor remarked, “I’m sure Season 2 will be absolutely amazing, and now I get to watch it as a fan boy instead of as a Witch.”
The Witcher is one of Netflix's biggest hits. Here's hoping that plenty of new fans tune in for the upcoming season, lest Netflix decides to cancel it, as per their bizarre tactic for creating original content.
