Beautiful Vanikoro art

Over a year ago I told you that French madman Xavier Gens (FRONTIERES, HITMAN) was planning on doing a different kind of cannibal flick, this one to be set way back in the 1700s! I don’t know about you, but I love the idea of a historical horror film – we don’t get too many of them, and when we do, it turns out to be something like VAN HELSING (okay, it’s arguable how “historical” that is, but you know what I mean). Slap on top of that the above image, which is early artwork for Gens’ movie (which I believe is titled VANIKORO, after one of the ships). If I could see that on the big screen in a movie about cannibals, I’d be a happy man to say the least.

Here’s what Gens himself has said about the project: “It’s an Historic movie about a shipwreck in the 18th century – where the survivor falls on an island inhabited by tribes of cannibals. It’s between Peter Jackson’s King Kong and Peter Weir’s “Master and Commander”.

While I honestly didn’t like FRONTIERE(S) or HITMAN, I’m still damned intrigued by this project. What say you, this tickle your fancy at all?
