Is beauty only skin deep? Find out in the warped horror short Shallow!

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Happy Friday! We're continuing our horror short film showcase here on Arrow in the Heard, cause let's face, is there a better way to start the day then with a thought-provoking and twisted little slice of genre goodness tossed your way? Exactly.

We're excited to present Joshua Steele's (who wrote, directed and edited) Award Winning short horror film SHALLOW which stars John Katona, Ruby Lee and Marie Sirena. So shut the lights, make sure all is quiet around you, stab the embed above and enjoy! SHALLOW is about:

A hideous creature roams the trashed apartment of a dead beautiful woman, experiencing her past memories to discover true beauty lies within.

Here's what Joshua had to say about how the short came about and what's next for a him as a filmmaker

My goal, as the director of Shallow, is to engage audiences in a way they are not used to experiencing on screen, with a music-driven, visual, stylized, surreal dark fantasy film. Shallow tells it's story non-linearly, as we jump through different points in time, and leaves the viewer curious to put the narrative puzzle pieces together, revealed throughout the course of the film.  In a nutshell, the original inception concept behind this film is a hideous creature discovering what it means to be beautiful.

The film was inspired partly from my personal life, in addition to a blend of fictional fantastical elements.  My next project as a filmmaker is a horror film, which I am currently writing with my Producer, Chris.  It is designed to make you jump in your seat, with lots of scares, and I look forward to getting that project off the ground hopefully in the next year or so.

SHALLOW was produced by Christopher Courtner and shot by Director of Photography Alexander Hoggard. Pietro Milanesi was behind the haunting music, the Special Effects Makeup were by Morgan Falschlehner while the Visual Effects were created by John Darian, Nathaniel Krause and Joshua Steele.

You can scoll down to see a very cool Behind the Scenes featurette as to the making of the film! Only watch the latter AFTER you've taken in the short.
