Behind the Cave

If you’re like me, you’re kind of excited for Bruce Hunt’s THE CAVE, about cave divers getting themselves stuck one mile beneath the surface and their attempts to get out… and battling underground monsters all at the same time!

Dina Delucci over at Cole-Hauser.net got a chance to chat it up with underwater unit coordinator/ underwater unit assistant director Jill Heinerth, discussing everything from how realistic the cave divers were represented in the film, as well as the possibility of real life cave monsters. Check it out!

Dina: The movie focuses on creatures that for some reason are in this underwater cave system. It’s a fictional piece as we’ve discussed but I wondered if you’ve ever done a cave dive and been scared by any creature of the deep?

Jill: There is a lot of life in underwater caves. There are incredible endemic species that have remained unchanged for millions of years. One particular critter comes to mind. It can latch onto prey 40 times its size with pincer-like claws. It sucks the life out of its prey and wriggles around like a segmented worm. Mind you, it is barely an inch long, but wondrous none the less.

We know more about space than underwater caves. There are creatures in caves that can teach us a lot about survival of the species. I look forward to seeing more advances in the study of this unique life. After all, if we are going to find life on places like Mars, it is likely to be living underground.

Dina: Jill, the movie must have been a wonderful experience for you and the rest of the cast and crew. Can you share a story about anything that happened on set that really will stick in your mind as a great memory of the shoot?

Jill: We had so many wonderful experiences on set, but the day I had to double for Lena in Mexico sticks out as a personal favorite. You have to understand that I am eight inches taller and almost twice the size of Lena. We had not anticipated me needing to double her and there were not any of her suits that would accommodate my size. It took an entire tube of KY Jelly to get me into her wetsuit.

Yup, you heard right- KY Jelly. Here’s some behind the scenes pics from the film. You can check out the entire interview by clicking HERE, and be sure to check out all that phat-underwater-cave-action April 8th at theaters everywhere!
