Now I’m a big fan of Alex Proyas, considering the man directed my favorite film and all, but I would be lying if I didn’t say I was shocked to see his newest project KNOWING beat-out I LOVE YOU, MAN for the top spot at the box office this past weekend. But hell… good for him! I’m actually not here to talk about Proyas or KNOWING, but actually the film’s writers!
The duo of Stiles White and Juliet Snowden, who penned BOOGEYMAN, will next be hard at work on two other scripts, both of which are ‘remakes.’ The Wrap recently caught up with the pair to talk about those exact scripts. What movies am I talking about? Well THE BIRDS and POLTERGEIST of course! Here’s a bit of what White had to say:
“Those are treasured films… those are beloved movies that go beyond just a good film. People really embrace those as part of their lives, the power they were at the moment, what was going on in their lives when they saw that movie….”
The duo went on to speak a bit more specifically on each film. Snowden added on THE BIRDS: “With something like “The Birds,” you can take the concept of birds gone crazy and put that onto a myriad of situations. Whereas with some other remakes, we really felt that those were movies that we really couldn’t think of new scenes or ideas. Some of these remakes are already-perfect movies. We’re not saying “The Birds” isn’t a perfect movie — but when we heard about that we had, instantly, a lot of ideas about what we could do [in the present] and how we would change it.”
White adds in regarding POLTERGEIST: “Poltergeist was a real snapshot of the American family in the year that it came out –1982 — and I think what we would do with the reimaging of it is, ‘What is the American family up to today?’” Hmm. Dare I say I’m willing to let these two give it a shot? Though I hope they’re careful with POLTERGEIST, what with the curse and all.
