Blade Runner 2033: Labyrinth video game gets a teaser trailer

The Blade Runner franchise is continuing to expand. While director Jeremy Podeswa gears up to go into production on the Blade Runner 2099 series pilot for Amazon’s Prime Video, Annapurna Interactive has unveiled a teaser trailer for the video game Blade Runner 2033: Labyrinth! The 2033 setting of this game puts it right in between the events of the original Blade Runner (which was set in 2019) and the sequel Blade Runner 2049. The trailer can be seen at the bottom of this article.

Game Informer notes that while Annapurna Interactive has released several games over the last few years, this is the first one they have developed in-house. And Annapurna notes that Blade Runner 2033: Labyrinth is the first new Blade Runner game for consoles and PC in development in 25 years. 110 Industries announced that they’re developing their own Blade Runner game last year, but that one’s not expected to be released until sometime in 2025. It looks like Blade Runner 2033: Labyrinth is going to beat it to the market – even though Annapurna hasn’t set a specific release date for their game yet.

Game director Chelsea Hash headed up the development of Blade Runner 2033: Labyrinth. All we know about it at the moment is that it takes place in a dystopian Los Angeles like its cinematic predecessors, and the game’s events occur after the Blackout hits. The Blackout is an event that was covered in the anime short Blade Runner Black Out 2022 and set the stage for elements of Blade Runner 2049.

Directed by Ridley Scott from a screenplay by Hampton Francher and David Webb Peoples, the original Blade Runner drew inspiration from the Philip K. Dick story Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and told the following story: Deckard is forced by the police Boss to continue his old job as Replicant Hunter. His assignment: eliminate four escaped Replicants from the colonies who have returned to Earth. Before starting the job, Deckard goes to the Tyrell Corporation and he meets Rachel, a Replicant girl he falls in love with.

Denis Villeneuve directed Blade Runner 2049 from a screenplay by Hampton Fancher and Michael Green, and that one was about what happens when Officer K, a new blade runner for the Los Angeles Police Department, unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. His discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard, a former blade runner who’s been missing for 30 years.
