Blade Runner, Asian-style

Tartan Films USA delivered the goods again with news regarding another addition to their Asia Extreme line of DVDs (still no Asia Carrera movies, though).

Directed by Byung-chun Min, NATURAL CITY – which weaves a tale of mortality and obsession with jaw-dropping visual effects and Korean style with an atmosphere reminiscent of ALIEN and BLADE RUNNER – bursts onto DVD Feb. 28th. The story goes like this:

Rebuilt after a devastating war, the world of 2080 has given rise to advanced technologies including the creation of cyborgs. Created with artificial intelligence (AI), human-like emotions and great strength, they serve mankind for their entire short lifespan. When the cyborgs revolt, Noma (Yoon Chan) and R (Yoo Ji-tae, OLDBOY, ANTARCTIC JOURNAL, LADY VENGEANCE) lead an elite military squad ordered to eliminate the rebellion. Unbeknownst to anyone, R is harvesting AI chips from dead cyborgs in order to save his dying lover, Ria (Seo Rin), a cyborg just days away from shutting down. Intent on stopping R, however, is his compatriot, Agent A, who knows something more may be amiss.

Sounds kickass! What’s the DVD like? Well for starters, the film is presented in anamorphic widescreen, with Korean, with English and Spanish subtitles, as well as Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound and DTS Surround Sound 5.1. On the extras side of things, we get The Story of Natural City featurette, deleted scenes, cast interviews, the original theatrical trailer, and trailers of Tartan Asia Extreme’s upcoming releases. All and all, another sweet DVD that causes your money to burn a hole in your pocket once the holiday hangover subsides. Check out the pics below if you need more convincing.
