Well I’m sure Neill Blomkamp isn’t having any trouble finding work. The director broke onto the scene this past Summer with DISTRICT 9 and now that that has come and gone speculation turns to what Blomkamp will be doing next.
Whether you dug DISTRICT 9 or not there’s no denying the flick was successful and very different. So I’m going to go ahead and assume the expectations will be pretty high for Blomkamp’s next directorial effort. Today via Variety we’ve learned a bit of info on that very project! Nothing solid here but roll with me..
According to Variety this mystery flick will be a sci-fi romp from Media Rights Capital. It’s currently untitled but is set to start production in the middle of next year, possibly for a Summer 2011 release if it’s big enough? All we do know for sure is that this film will cost a lot more than DISTRICT 9’s $30 million budget. The director sold Media Rights via his pitch and has been given creative freedom and a production commitment that isn’t contingent on domestic distribution. Here’s what Blomkamp had to say:
“MRC is letting me make the film I want to make, and that is by far the most important thing here. The film will hopefully be commercial, but it is very much a singular film, (one) that comes directly from me.”
Nice! There’s no doubt Blomkamp has got one unique vision so it’s exciting to see what he’ll come up with. Apparently the director is starting work on the script and visual effects immediately so keep it here as we await an update on Blomkamp’s mystery sci-fi movie.
