I’m a recent convert to the Blu-ray revolution (WALL-E and THE FALL are absolutely fantastic) so right now I’m just reveling in the beauty of 1080p. But there are people out there looking into the future. The future, Conan? That’s right, they’re already thinking about Blu-ray in 3-D. Panasonic has submitted a proposal to the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) that would allow for standardization of storing 3-D imagery in high definition. On the surface, Panasonic is saying they’re looking for the standard to avoid a format war like the one that plagued the HD disc industry, but let’s not forget that they’d stand to make a pretty penny from any such standardization, should it be adopted. The interesting thing about the technology used to bring 3-D to your Blu-ray and HDTV is that it all currently exists. There will be no waiting around for components necessary to deliver the goods. The company says that if they can begin a formal discussion on standardization with BDA before the end of 2008, it is likely that it can be rolled out to consumers in 2010. With more and more films being released in 3-D these days, it was only a matter of time. And once this happens, it’s only a matter of time before I become a hermit who never leaves the house.
