With nine big screen movies featuring Batman released and a tenth debuting in next year's BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, it is always interesting to see what could have been and what never was. Once such story is that of BATMAN BEYOND. Back in 2000, when Darren Aronofsky was developing BATMAN: YEAR ONE, director Boaz Yakin was riding high on the success of REMEMBER THE TITANS. It was then that he made a pitch to Warner Bros for a BATMAN BEYOND movie which the studio liked.
Speaking with IGN regarding his new film, MAX, Yakin shared what his idea was for BATMAN BEYOND.
"It was almost like Sam Raimi's Spider-Man but a little bit darker — a teenage, kind of futuristic, cyberpunk Batman thing."
Yakin says he psyched himself out of the project and realized he wasn't ready to make a big studio superhero movie and he quit after only one draft of the screenplay.
"It might have really hurt my career. I went off and wrote the best script I ever wrote that never got made. But it was just one of those moments in time where you think you want to do something, and then you realize you don't really want to do it, and for some reason it's on your IMDb page for the rest of your life. [Laughs]"
While there could still be a BATMAN BEYOND movie since it takes place in a future that would keep it apart from the mainline continuity of the DC Cinematic Universe, I doubt that Warner Bros is focusing on anything apart from their main superhero plans at this moment. Still, it is always cool to hear what could have been.
