Very sad news this morning: the always excellent Bob Hoskins has died at the age of 71. Hoskins died yesterday in a hospital following a battle with pneumonia, according to statement made by his agent. In 2012 Hoskins revealed he had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, and also announced he was retiring from acting. Hoskins was surrounded by his family when he passed away.
Bob Hoskins was nominated for a Best Actor Academy Award for his performance in 1986's MONA LISA, and won BAFTA, Golden Globe and a bunch of other awards for his work in the film.
Hoskins was also nominated for BAFTAs for his roles in THE LONG GOOD FRIDAY and THE HONORARY CONSUL, but most fans of the actor will probably remember him for his Golden Globe nominated role in WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT as Eddie Valiant and as Smee in HOOK. Hoskins also played Mario in SUPER MARIO BROS., but the actor would probably prefer not being remembered for that film.
Hoskins did great work in several other fantastic films as well, including Terry Gilliam's BRAZIL, Oliver Stone's NIXON, 1990's MERMAID, and Jet Li's UNLEASHED (also known as DANNY THE DOG.) The actor's final role was in 2012's SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN.
