Director Bong Joon-Ho's SNOWPIERCER has had a timultuous ride to the theaters, which is metaphoric given the film's storyline. The film was bought by Harvey Weinstein in 2012 "on the basis of script and some sample footage" and decided to have the film cut down after seeing the finished cut, which ran just over 2.5 hours. Naturally, this caused quite a stir and Joon-Ho was very vocal about his disappointment with the edits, but it appears that a truce has been reached.

According to Deadline, Joon-Ho and Weinstein have entered into an agreement that "keeps the length of his action film but instead of a wide release, it will be a platform release with a roll out." So, what SNOWPIERCER loses is a wide release, and what it gains is the integrity of the director's vision. Who wins here? It's hard to say. It's great that the film will remain uncut, but sad that it won't reach a wider audience. That said, it probably was never going to reach a wide audience anyway, as your average moviegoer isn't typically game for a lengthy sci-fi pic like this, even when it's lauded by critics (CLOUD ATLAS anyone?)

Still no official release date, but once this deal is finalized you can expect to hear something soon.
