Adaptation of zombie novel WORLD WAR Z has gone through some ups and down trying to get made so far, but it’s come back to life in a big way with this latest bit of news.
Brad Pitt’s production company has owned the rights to the project since 2007, after out bidding Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way for it. But it was never certain that Pitt would star, until now. MTV confirmed with the book’s author, Max Brooks, on the show floor of SDCC that he’d just received a call confirming Pitt’s starring role while signing copies of Z last night.
“I can’t believe how cool Paramount has been to me and these projects, and how cool Plan B has been,” said Brooks when asked for his reaction to the news.
Brooks said the studio recently received a new draft of the “World War Z” script, and “Quantum of Solace” director Marc Forster is still attached to direct the film.
“I’m glad they took their time, and are trying to make the best zombie movie they can,” said Brooks. “I’m so glad they stayed with the project and so glad they found the right team.”
The book follows the saga of the earth as it’s ravaged by a zombie apocalypse, but reportedly it’s league cooler than almost any other zombie concept we’ve seen recently. And hey, no vampires to be found.
The film is currently set to be released in summer 2012, and now with a big star firmly attached, hopefully it can finally kick things into gear and actually get made.
