Colleen Hoover and Michael Showalter
Author Colleen Hoover has seen quite a bit of success with her big-screen adaptations in recent years. Her domestic abuse tale, It Ends With Us, captured audiences with the drama on screen and behind the scenes involving stars Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni. The success paved the way for last year’s Regretting You and for the more recent Reminders of Him. Now, we get a new stylish and erotic psychological thriller from director Michael Showalter. Showalter is known for his comedies, like Wet Hot American Summer, which he wrote, but he would direct films like The Big Sick, The Idea of You and Oh. What. Fun. So, it’ll be interesting to see how he tackles a thriller like this.
Only darkness from here
Amazon MGM Studios has just released the new trailer for Verity. The film stars Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, Josh Hartnett, Ismael Cruz Cordova and Brady Wagner.
The official synopsis reads,
“Adapted from Colleen Hoover’s best-selling novel, this seductive, psychological thriller follows renowned author Verity Crawford (Anne Hathaway) and Lowen Ashleigh (Dakota Johnson), a struggling writer who relocates to the remote Crawford estate to ghostwrite for Verity. After Lowen uncovers what appears to be Verity’s chilling autobiographical notes, she wrestles with the disturbing and twisted confessions about Verity’s husband Jeremy (Josh Hartnett), and finds it hard to separate fiction from reality, manipulation from attraction, and opportunity from obsession.”
Showalter directs the movie from a screenplay adapted by Nick Antosca, which is based on the Colleen Hoover book. Producers on the movie include Nick Antosca, Alex Hedlund, Stacey Sher, Michael Showalter, Jordana Mollick, Anne Hathaway and Colleen Hoover. Meanwhile, Kerry Orent, Dakota Johnson and Lauren Levine are serving as the project’s executive producers.
Hoover’s Success
Hoover’s novels have been exceptionally popular, and the movies based on her books have been big successes at the box office. The most recent, Reminders of Him, stars Maika Monroe and Tyriq Withers and follows a young woman who has just been released from prison and returns home to reconnect with her young daughter. It was released just last month and has grossed $88 million.
The 2025 romantic drama Regretting You starred Allison Williams, Mckenna Grace, Dave Franco, and Mason Thames and grossed 90.5 million.
And then there’s It Ends with Us, which was an enormous success with $351 million worldwide. Despite that success, the film has been vastly overshadowed by the ongoing legal battle between star Blake Lively and co-star/director Justin Baldoni.
Verity opens in theaters on October 2.
