Writer/director Lance Edmands made his feature debut with the drama Bluebird back in 2013, and now Deadline reports that he’s in pre-production on his second film, the psychological thriller Brightwater. Emily Browning (American Gods), Scoot McNairy (Narcos: Mexico), and Jack Reynor (Midsommar) have signed on to star in the film, which Bankside Films and Verve Ventures will be presenting to potential buyers at the Cannes film market.

Brightwater has the following synopsis:

A big-city architect travels to an isolated Maine island with plans to build a sprawling luxury resort. When his girlfriend mysteriously vanishes, he embarks on a desperate search across the unforgiving landscape and into his own psyche.

The film is being produced by Joe Pirro of Symbolic Exchange, along with Alex Lipschultz. Stephen Kelliher and Sophie Green of Bankside Films serve as executive producers with James Schamus.

Edmands had this to say about his new project:

This massively talented team of actors, producers, and sales partners genuinely believes in creating the kind of atmospheric, character-driven suspense film I’ve always envisioned. I’m thrilled and humbled to be making Brightwater with them by my side.”

Schamus, who has earned Oscar nominations for co-writing Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and producing Brokeback Mountain, added:

Lance, Joe and Alex have assembled an extraordinary cast and crew to help bring to the screen a vision of characters at once uncannily familiar and unsettlingly original. It’s an honor to be part of the team.”

Brightwater is off to a good start with this cast and team, so I look forward to seeing how it’s going to turn out. Does Brightwater sound interesting to you? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Browning’s other credits include Ghost Ship, Darkness Falls, A Series of Unfortunate Events, The Uninvited, Sleeping Beauty, Sucker Punch, and The Affair. McNairy has been seen in Monsters, Killing Them Softly, 12 Years a Slave, Non-Stop, Gone Girl, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Halt and Catch Fire, True Detective, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and A Quiet Place Part II. Reynor has also been in Transformers: Age of Extinction, Sing Street, and Free Fire.
