I became a fan of actress Teyonah Parris through watching the Marvel Disney+ series WandaVision earlier this year, so one of the main reasons why I’m looking forward to director Nia DaCosta’s upcoming Candyman reboot / “spiritual sequel” (watch the original Candyman at THIS LINK) is the fact that Parris has a prominent role in the film. Prominent enough that she’s featured in both of the clips that are embedded above, along with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Both clips involve the characters Anthony and Brianna looking in mirrors and saying the name “Candyman”, but the two scenes have very different tones.
The new Candyman is set to reach theatres on August 27th. Directed by DaCosta from a screenplay she wrote with producers Jordan Peele and Win Rosenfeld, the film has the following synopsis:
For as long as residents can remember, the housing projects of Chicago’s Cabrini Green neighborhood were terrorized by a word-of-mouth ghost story about a supernatural killer with a hook for a hand, easily summoned by those daring to repeat his name five times into a mirror. In present day, a decade after the last of the Cabrini towers were torn down, visual artist Anthony McCoy (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) and his girlfriend, gallery director Brianna Cartwright (Teyonah Parris), move into a luxury loft condo in Cabrini, now gentrified beyond recognition and inhabited by upwardly mobile millennials.

The actors mentioned above are joined in the cast by Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, with original Candyman cast member Vanessa Williams reprising the role of Anne-Marie McCoy. The Anthony McCoy character is believed to be Anne-Marie’s son, the baby from the first film.
Tony Todd is also in the film, to some degree.
