J.J. Abrams is one sneaky bastard. I’m impressed with how secretive the filmmaker can be in a day and age like today, what with crazy online journalist like me running around. Don’t get me wrong though, the secrecy is very welcome and very intriguing. What am I getting out? Abrams’ upcoming collaboration with film God Steven Spielberg that’s what! I’m of course talking about SUPER 8.
Much like Abrams’ CLOVERFIELD, everything surrounding SUPER 8 is shrouded with secrecy. Thus far we haven’t heard much on the flick at all… and we like it that way! All we’ve seen is a very intriguing teaser for the project, which can be found below, and the news that Neville Page (AVATAR, CLOVERFIELD) will be handling the creature design for the film. Thankfully today we’ve got a bit more of an update for you all!
Some actual news on this little diddy is finally filtering through over at New York Magazine’s Vulture. So what are the details today? The first casting announcements of course! Though I may be getting a little over-excited here. No huge names here folks but still worth noting considering news on SUPER 8 is like finding two prizes in a cereal box. So who are the first two names joning the super-secret sci-fi project? Kyle Chandler and Elle Fanning, that’s who!
Chandler (above) is best known for TV’s “Friday Night Lights” while Fanning (below) is probably best known for being Dakota Fanning’s little sister. Guess the child star thing runs in the family huh? No word on who the two will be playing but word has it Fanning will be filling the role described as: “Female 13-14. A natural beauty – she is stunning, but not the ‘cheerleader’ type. Strong and confident, but has an underlying sadness. Should have a Midwestern feel.” Though of course nothing is confirmed.
SUPER 8 has Abrams directing with Spielberg producing. The only other detail we know is that the flick should be hitting theaters sometime in Summer 2011. As always when we hear anything else regarding SUPER 8 we’ll be sure to pass the word along to all of you!
