I have (shamefully) not yet seen Daniel Monzon’s highly acclaimed thriller CELL 211 yet, but by all accounts it’s a really gripping ride. The film, about a guard trying to stay alive in the midst of a prison riot, won a boatload of Spanish awards and is in the process of being remade by Paul Haggis. Monzon (pictured above, center) is now starting to ride the wave of the accolades by prepping his next series of films.
One of these films, a comedic thriller, might be a real hoot. (Yeah, I say “hoot”.) Called MURDER WEEKEND, the story focuses on a group of struggling actors who make ends meet by participating in staged “murder weekends” for crime enthusiasts. The hitch comes when they have to deal with a real corpse.
Sounds like it’s a bit in the Agatha Christie vein, with maybe a hint of Hitchcock. Can’t go wrong with that.
The film is an English-language effort, and a co-production between Spain, the UK and the US. Monzon is in the process of lining up what Screen Daily calls a “top-notch British ensemble cast.”
