Chavarria and Garza land roles on The Purge TV series

With THE FIRST PURGE, a prequel to the existing PURGE trilogy, set to reach theatres on July 4th, I wasn't expecting to hear any news about the Purge television series any time soon. But here we are, the first casting announcements for the series have already been made.

PURGE creator James DeMonaco and Blumhouse Television are developing the series, which will air on both USA Network and Syfy. The first actors cast for this "new chapter in America's 12 hours of annual lawlessness" are:

Gabriel Chavarria (pictured above), who will playing a character named Miguel,

a US Marine with a hard edge and a noble mission. After receiving a cryptic letter from his little sister, Penelope, he returns to town on Purge Night – prepared to face the senseless violence in the streets alone in order to protect what he loves most – his family.

Jessica Garza (she's on the left side of the image below) is set to play Miguel's sister Penelope, who

belongs to a Purge-worshipping cult. Having pledged herself to be sacrificed at the behest of their charismatic leader, Penelope’s faith is tested when she is exposed to the ghastly realities of the Purge.

It seems odd to worship a government-organized event, but okay. You do you, Purge cult.

Platinum Dunes and Sebastien K Lemercier will serve as executive producers on the series.

I'm really looking forward to this show, it will be interesting to see a Purge story play out in TV episodes, allowing DeMonaco to spend more time exploring what the world of the Purge is like.
