Not exactly sure what the hell I’m looking at with this Japanese teaser for director Sono Sion’s WHY DON”T YOU’ PLAY IN HELL?, but there are plenty of weird eye-catching images to enjoy. Unfortunately, I’m not even able to suss out what this movie is about, but does that even really matter?

WHY DON’T YOU PLAY IN HELL? (Jigoku de naze warui?), the latest film from director Sion Sono, is finally set for a September opening! Completely outrageous trailer video also now available to watch! Now, Sono’s next film is his most ‘won’t believe your eyes’ action entertainment, WHY DON’T YOU PLAY IN HELL? For this film, Sono has returned to and improved a ten-some year old screenplay he wrote, and that its underlying theme is ‘the love for 35mm film’. Actors include Jun Kunimura (first time in a Sono film), plus co-stars Shinichi Tsutsumi, Hiroki Hasegawa, Gen Hoshino, Fumi Nikaido, Tomochika, plus others from the film world as supporting actors who will bring fresh talent to the film, regular Sono partners, and so on, to create a story of radical love. Obviously, we’re still no closer to understanding the plot, but I do dig that in the midst of all the bloody and strangeness that it’s ultimately about “the love for 35mm film.” WHY DON’T YOU PLAY IN HELL opens, as indicated above, on September 28th in Japan; check out the official site HERE.
