The pandemic shut the world down in 2020 – but it didn’t shut down the production of Equilibrium director Kurt Wimmer’s new take on the Stephen King story Children of the Corn. By following “stringent health and safety protocols”, the project was able to continue filming in Australia even while most other productions around the world were brought to a halt. Filming wrapped in June of 2020, and the movie got a theatrical release… in two theatres in Florida… back in October of 2020. We’ve never heard exactly when genre fans who weren’t able to attend those screenings in Florida will be able to see this movie. But according to the website for the production company ANVL Entertainment, Wimmer’s Children of the Corn is aiming for a Fall 2022 release.

The last time we heard an update on this Children of the Corn was over a year ago, when ANVL Entertainment released a batch of images from the film. The idea of a 2022 release does line up with what the folks at DU-HD.com were told by two sources last October.

Inspired by the short story by Stephen King, Wimmer’s Children of the Corn shows

the events leading up to, and including, the massacre of the adults of a small town in Nebraska by their children, after the adults’ irresponsibility ruins the crop and the children’s future.

Here’s another synopsis:

A smart teenager finds herself trapped in a horrific plot by the young children in her town to murder all their parents and ‘heal the corn.’

The cast includes Elena Kampouris, Kate Moyer, Callan Mulvey, and Bruce Spence.

This Children of the Corn was produced by Lucas Foster, Doug Barry, John Baldecchi, and Pam Collis. Wimmer executive produced alongside Mathieu Bonzon, Pascal Borno, John Fragomeni, Brian LaRoda, Keri Nakamoto, Andre Gaines, Sean Harner, and Donald P. Borchers.

The film was rated R for “violence and bloody images”.

The Children of the Corn franchise doesn’t seem to have a lot of fans, but I am one of them, and I have been anxiously waiting to see this movie for two years now. Fall is quickly approaching, so hopefully it won’t be much longer before we’ll find out when more people will have the chance to see this movie.
