Child’s Play remake director Lars Klevberg is hoping to make a sequel

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Last year, MGM released a CHILD'S PLAY remake (pick up a copy HERE) that didn't have any effect on the original franchise, which is still alive and well at Universal – in fact, a teaser trailer for the Chucky TV series that's set up at Syfy was just released online earlier this month. If remake director Lars Klevberg gets his way, we won't just have a remake that has no effect on the original Chucky, we'll have two separate, concurrent CHILD'S PLAY franchises.

Soon after the remake was released, Klevberg let it be known that he wants to make a CHILD'S PLAY 2, and that he's interested in featuring more of the Buddi Bears seen in the remake. Yesterday, Klevberg hosted Q&As with CHILD'S PLAY 2019 star Gabriel Batemand and cinematographer Brendan Uegama on his Instagram, and during the two hour chat he reiterated his desire to make CHILD'S PLAY 2. He's just waiting for MGM to say they want to make a sequel.

While reminiscing about the experience of making the remake with Bateman, Klevberg said,

We had fun. It would be amazing to pull the crew and the actors back for another one, but MGM needs to get their stuff together and do it. It's all there."

Whenever followers asked whether or not a sequel would be happening, Klevberg's answer was, "We don't know."

The remake earned almost $45 million at the global box office on a budget of $10 million, so it would make some sense for MGM to move forward on another installment before too much time passes.

Klevberg directed the new CHILD'S PLAY from a screenplay by Tyler Burton Smith. The film stars Aubrey Plaza, Gabriel Bateman, Brian Tyree Henry, Tim Matheson, Beatrice Kitsos, Ty Consiglio, and Carlease Burke, and tells the familiar story of

a mother who gives her son a toy doll for his birthday, unaware of its more sinister nature.

This time around Chucky is "an obsolete model of the bestselling Buddi doll with a glitch in his chip and the ability to control a vast network of interconnected devices." Mark Hamill provided the voice for this new take on the iconic character.

CHILD'S PLAY was produced by David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith through their company KatzSmith Productions.
