Last April we wrote about Scott Cooper’s decision to follow up CRAZY HEART with a gritty revenge tale called THE LOW DWELLER. Well, with a title change comes an attached movie star…

Word has dropped today that Christian Bale has decided to make the film – now called OUT OF THE FURNACE – with Cooper and Relativity Media. DiCaprio’s Appian Way and the brothers Scott’s FreeScott are also producing the flick, which is drawing comparisons to NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN.

Based on story by Brad Ingelsby:

OUT OF THE FURNACE is a dark drama set in 1986 Indiana. Bale will play protagonist Slim, a man released after serving years in prison for murder who wants only to follow through on his promise to marry his long-suffering girlfriend. But when he discovers his brother has been murdered after getting involved in a gambling racket, his goals change and he avenges the murder.

According to Variety, Cooper is interested in Viggo Mortensen for the villain, while Casey Affleck, Garret Hedlund and Taylor Kitsch are among the names up for the role of Bale’s brother. Cooper’s mentor Robert Duvall is likely to play Bale’s uncle in the film.

Sounds like a heavyweight bout to me. I love the dark material and the actors involved, so I’ll do my personal best to keep those of you interested abreast.  Seriously though, how can you not be down with this one?!?

OUT OF THE FURNACE looks to shoot this June.
