While LOST RIVER, the directorial debut of Ryan Gosling, is quietly being dumped in only three theaters next week before a VOD premiere, a new trailer has arrived with more mysterious visuals and bizarre dialogue that doesn’t help explain the plot any further than before. We do get our first looks at stars Christina Hendricks, Saoirse Ronan, and Ben Mendelsohn along with a cameo from BLACK SUNDAY star Barbara Steele.

A single mother enters a dark lifestyle after facing economic difficulties. Meanwhile her eldest son has to take care of his younger brother because of the absence of their mother and gets into trouble with the town’s feared bully, while trying to help to get some money to help his mother. Afterward, he uncovers a road leading to an underwater utopia.

I would be lying if I didn’t say I was intrigued by what kind of a filmmaker Ryan Gosling wants to be. While the earlier looks at LOST RIVER looked very influenced by Gosling’s work with Nicolas Winding Refn, it also felt like what you would expect a film student to try and make after using all the tricks they learned. But, then I saw the clip of Christina Hendricks peeling her own face off and that was enough to buy my ticket.

LOST RIVER was critically ravaged when it premiered at Cannes last year so that likely doesn’t bode well for the quality of the movie, but we will all get to judge for ourselves when it is released on April 10th.
