Is it just me, or all of a sudden studios have decided to release en masse collections of selected films done by particular actors? Chuck Norris, Anglina Jolie, John Wayne, Nicholas Cage, the list goes on. Now Universal is jumping on the bandwagon with some collections from horror legends Boris Karloff and Lon Chaney Jr. set for release September 19th at $29.98 each.
First up is The Boris Karloff Collection, which spans three discs consisting of five films from the man who made Frankenstein’s Monster and The Mummy icons in the genre. Unfortunately, those icons aren’t in this set. Instead, we get NIGHT KEY (1937), TOWER OF LONDON (1939), THE CLIMAX (1944), THE STRANGE DOOR (1951) and THE BLACK CASTLE (1952). Each film in the set will be presented in their original 1.33:1 ratio with an English Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono audio track. Right now the only extras in the set are theatrical trailers for NIGHT KEY and THE CLIMAX.

The other set released the same day is Inner Sanctum Mysteries: The Complete Movie Collection, which is a two-disc set of six films starring Lon Chaney Jr. The films in the set include CALLING DR. DEATH (1943), WEIRD WOMAN (1944), DEAD MAN’S EYES (1945), THE FROZEN GHOST (1945), STRANGE CONFESSION (1945), and PILLOW OF DEATH (1945). Like the Karloff Collection, the films are presented in their original 1.33:1 ratio with an English Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono audio track. So far, this collection appears to be bare bones, but that may change for both of these sets.
