NEON has dropped the first trailer for the upcoming drama, CLEMENCY, which stars Alfre Woodard as Bernadine Williams, a prison warden who is dealing with the psychological trauma that’s come after years of sending Death Row inmates to their deaths. The film won the Grand Jury prize out of the Sundance Film Festival this year, making director Chinonye Chukwu the first black woman to take home the honors.

Anyone who has been keeping an eye on the indie scenes and the performances to watch this year has certainly heard all the praise around Woodard’s performance. She’s been receiving some of the best reviews of her whole career, and it all could lead to her second Oscar nomination (her first being for the film CROSS CREEK). The trailer itself is built around her character’s emotional turmoil, as all her years of sending Death Row inmates to executions have taken a toll. This all comes to a head with the arrival of a new Death Row inmate, Anthony Woods, played by Aldis Hodge, who is also earning praise for his performance.

Alongside them are Wendell Pierce, Richard Schiff, Danielle Brooks, and more, and it's in theaters on December 27.
