After months of hype (ever since the trailer debuted with TRANSFORMERS this past July), countless conspiracy theories, buttloads of new videos and clips, and probably one of the most mysterious projects to hit the mainstream in a while… after all the build up, it looks like it all paid off for CLOVERFIELD, as it essentially slaughtered the competition at the box office over the weekend!
No only did it make just over $40M (!!!) in it’s first weekend of release, but managed to score the biggest movie debut for Martin Luther King Day weekend EVER! Holy crap!
I had my reservations about CLOVERFIELD, mostly because the hype wore off on me a few months ago, but in the end… I’m glad it (apparently) ended up being pretty good, and was monstrously successful, as the flick only cost somewhere around $25M to make. Again – wow!
Check out the rest of the box office results below, and if you didn’t catch CLOVERFIELD over the weekend, you can rest assured that it’s likely worth the ticket price and then some. And with one more day left in the holiday weekend, I can only assume it’ll surpass the $50M mark, and in just 4 days, too (in January, no less).
